In Pursuit of Ideal Cartridges

Taking advantage of leverage, the cantilever makes it possible to move the stylus tip with less force. In short, it reduces the virtual weight of the vibration system, which tends to be quite heavy. This is why a cantilever has been regarded indispensable for a cartridge to secure responses at high frequencies. However, when the vibrations picked up from the groove by the stylus tip are transmitted to the generating part via the cantilever, the reproduced sound is often distorted by the noise made by the cantilever itself. Isamu Ikeda has resolved this problem in the most straightforward manner, by developing a cartridge that transmits the vibrations directly from the stylus tip, not via a cantilever.

However, it is always easier said than done. To develop a cartridge like that, one has to minimize the weight of the vibration system first. When the length from the center of the vibration system to the stylus tip is extended five times longer by a cantilever, the virtual mass of the vibration system is reduced to one fifth. In contrast, if they are direct-coupled, the mass of the generator coil is equivalent to the effective mass, resulting in poor high frequency responses. After three years of research, Ikeda succeeded to minimize the weight of the vibration system, realizing superb high-frequency responses and lighter loads on records, which also serves to prolong disc lives. Moreover, Ikeda put some thought into designing the suspension function as well. In 1993, having solved all the technical challenges, Ikeda released 9REX, featuring an amazingly light stylus pressure (1.5g.) Behind this were Isamu Ikeda's unabated enthusiasm, the high precision of IKEDA's cartridge manufacturing and his expertise in engineering.

If you plan to purchase an IKEDA cartridge, it is advisable to purchase an IKEDA tonearm before the cartridge. As for FR64s, consult us before use.
